Night Hike

Good Friday - 21st March

NightHike

It was 18:00 and 7 teams of Scouts from 4 groups met for an overnight hike. Despite worries from some parents about the awful weather we were experiencing, by the time the first team were due to start, the sudden torrential downpour of freezing rain had passed over and there was a clear sky. The new Full Moon was also out.

The teams started at 15min intervals and made their way from Cocking Hill up to the first check point where they had to estimate a distance of 23 feet before being given their next checkpoint grid ref.

The full moon continued to shine allowing most groups to walk without the need for torches, except when having to read the map. It was a bit blustery towards the top of the hills, but apart from that a perfect night for walking.

Further checkpoints included reciting the Scout Law (an old favourite), the Country Code, making as many map symbols out of cocktail sticks in 2 mins, Kims Game and the Phonetic Alphabet.

The first team arrived back at the hut just before midnight, and the last just after 2am.

Everyone then had a few hours sleep before having a hearty breakfast and then going home - possibly to sleep some more!
